The Craft
A great tile floor starts below the tile. Large-format porcelain — tiles two feet, four feet, even ten feet long — will telegraph every hollow and hump in the substrate, so we begin by flattening: self-leveling underlayments, flatness verified against the standard the tile demands, and crack-isolation or uncoupling membranes where the slab calls for them.
From there, layout is everything. We plan floors from the sight lines of the home — entries, hallways, and the run of the great room — so patterns stay true through doorways and borders land evenly. Herringbone, chevron, French pattern, and mosaic work are laid out in drawings first and approved before installation.

- Can you install tile over radiant floor heating?
- Yes — tile and stone are the best finish floors for radiant heat because they conduct and hold warmth. We embed electric mats or coordinate with hydronic installers, verify sensor placement, and test the system before and after covering it.
- What flatness does large-format tile require?
- Industry standard for tile with any side longer than 15 inches is no more than 1/8 inch of variation in 10 feet. Very few slabs meet that as poured, which is why substrate preparation is a line item in our proposals rather than an afterthought.
- How soon can a new tile floor be walked on?
- Light foot traffic is typically fine 24 hours after setting, with grouting the following day and full cure before heavy use or furniture. We build this into the project schedule with your builder so no one walks a floor early.
- Do tile floors work with modern slab-on-grade construction?
- Yes, with the right preparation. New slabs shrink and can crack as they cure, so we use crack-isolation or uncoupling membranes over control joints and verify moisture levels before installation — especially important for stone.
